ਪੰਜਾਬ ਨਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਹਿੰਦੁਸਤਾਨ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਸਗੋਂ ਹਿੰਦੁਸਤਾਨ ਦੇ ਨਾਮਕਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਖਿੱਤੇ ਦੀ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਵਰਨਣਯੋਗ ਹੈ
ਰਿਗਵੈਦਿਕ ਕਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸਤਾਂ ਦਰਿਆਂਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਕਾਰਨ `ਸਪਤ-ਸਿੰਧੂ’ ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ. ਸਮੇਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ਼ ਮਹਾਂਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ  ਯੁੱਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਚ-ਨਦ ਭਾਵ ਪੰਜ ਦਰਿਆਂਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਣ ਲੱਗਾ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਉਣ ਨਾਲ ਫ਼ਾਰਸੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਪੰਜ-ਆਬ (ਪੰਜਾਬ) ਭਾਵ ਪੰਜ ਪਾਣੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਜੋਂ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਣ ਲੱਗਾ।

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਦੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਿਕ ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਗੁਜ਼ਰਦਿਆਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਸੱਤ ਦਰਿਆਂਵਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪੰਜ ਅਤੇ ਘਟਦੇ-ਘਟਦੇ ਅਜੋਕੇ ਢਾਈ ਕੁ ਦਰਿਆਂਵਾਂ ਤੱਕ ਸੀਮਿਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਰਹਿ ਗਏ ਹਾਂ. 1947 ਦੀ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀ ਵੰਡ ਪੰਜਾਬੀਆਂ ਉਪਰ ਕਹਿਰ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਟੁੱਟੀ।ਅਜੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਲੋਕ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰਿਕ ਰਿਸ਼ਤਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਆਈ ਦਰਾੜ ਦੇ ਦਰਦ ਚੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਉਭਰ ਸਕੇ ਕਿ 1 ਨਵੰਬਰ 1966 ਨੂੰ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਈ ਅਧਾਰ ਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਰਾਜ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਨ
ਹਿਸਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਵੰਡ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ, ਜਿਸਦੇ ਨਤੀਜੇ ਵਜੋਂ ਅੱਜ ਦਾ ਹਰਿਆਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਹਿਮਾਚਲ ਰਾਜ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਭੂਗੋਲਿਕ ਨਕਸ਼ੇ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਬਾਹਰ ਹੋ ਗਏ।

ENGLISH TRANSLATION-

Punjab has not only been the gateway to India but also the role of this region in naming India.
In the Rig Vedic period, Punjab is known as 'Sapat-Sindhu' because of the land of seven rivers. With the passage of time, in the age of Mahabharata, Punjab came to be known as Panch-Nad, meaning the land of five rivers, which with the advent of Muslims came to be known as Panj-Ab (Punjab), meaning the land of five waters, according to the Persian translation.

Going through the historical journey of Punjabi culture, we have been confined to seven rivers, five and declining to the present day two and a half rivers. The partition of the country in 1947 broke out in a fit of rage against the Punjabis.In 1966 its parts was Divided into parts, as a result of which today's Haryana and Himachal states are permanently off the geographical map of Punjab.
